This weekend my daughter unit and I were discussing what kind of dog I’d allow to own me (because we all know that’s how it ends up) once I sell my house and move. She would like to see me with an extremely large and protective dog that would stop anybody from messing with me with just one look. Unfortunately, since I will be renting for a while, certain breeds will probably not be allowed. German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Staffie mix (“pit bulls”) are seldom welcome in an apartment complex or a condo with a Home Owners Association.
I do, however, have a few “must haves”:
- Must be able to walk at a brisk pace for a minimum of two miles
- Must be smart — easy to train and good temperament
- Medium to low maintenance — easily groomed and bathed with an occasional grooming by a professional
With all that in mind, we started watching videos. I did not know that the Bichon Frise’s hair grows like a human’s and requires frequent trimming. Also, their coats are magnets for twigs, leaves, dirt.
First of all, it is important to remember that a Shetland is NOT a miniature collie (although they certainly look like it to me). These dogs rank number six in Intelligence and are awesome at agility runs. I could see me setting up an indoor course for when it’s too hot to go outside. I absolutely love the white and gray markings of the one pictured.
Whatever your opinion of a poodle (and they come in multiple sizes), this is considered to be one of the smartest dogs. Depending on which list you select (www.goodhousekeeping.com/...), the poodle ranks right up there. Even more important, they are known for their hypoallergenic coat (which is a plus) and don’t shed (bigger plus).
Those are the top three that made my list (after a lot of whittling down). So now it is your job to be “My Helpers” and either vote for one of these three, vote for a different breed, or select “other” and put it in the comments. You may include personal photos of your selection, humorous gifs or awesome stories supporting your selection.
